describes the various layers that make up the structure; then examines the central question of the play: why does Hamlet delay?; and concludes that the work has lasted for over
400 years precisely because it leaves so many issues unresolved. Discussion Just considering the various layers of this incredibly complex work is a good way to begin. There are
so many possible subjects we could pursue that its dizzying. They include Hamlets relationship with his mother; his relationship with Claudius; his bullying of Ophelia; his madness, which may or
may not be real; his endless waffling over whether or not he should obey the Ghosts commands; his melancholy personality; his intense introspection; and his gift of wit and language.
And thats just the main character. We might also consider the relationship between Gertrude and Claudius. Recent adaptations tend to take the position that they were lovers before King Hamlet
died, and the text will support that. We also have the question of the nature of the relationship between Hamlet and Ophelia (it could be a tabloid headline: "Hamlet and
Ophelia: More than Just Friends? A Palace Source Tells All"). Then there is also the almost-incestuous relationship between Hamlet and his mother. He is in college and presumably no
longer ignorant of the fact that adults express love physically. Gertrude is not an old crone but a woman in her prime. Why does the fact that she and Claudius
have sex send Hamlet into a frenzy? We could also analyze the play within a play, which is a wonderful glimpse into the workings of Hamlets mind. We could
