as a good death also dates back to the ancient Greek society that considered a citizens request for government help in committing suicide to be "a noble act" (Zanskas &
Coduti, 2006, p. 27). In contemporary times, euthanasia is defined as "a deliberate intervention, by act or omission, in the life of a dying person with the intention of
putting an end to that persons life and suffering," and takes active and passive forms (quoted in Zanskas & Coduti, 2006, p. 27). During active euthanasia, as the name
implies, a physician or medical professional takes an active role in the death of a patient, and therefore is used interchangeably with physician-assisted suicide, in which the patient actively seeks
medical assistance to end suffering (Zanskas & Coduti, 2006). Passive euthanasia is the prohibition of sustenance such as nourishment that is necessary to live. The Netherlands have permitted
the practices of active and passive euthanasia since the 1970s, but despite a supposed separation of church and state, the federal government of the United States has upheld the Christian
notion that taking a life under any circumstances is wrong and therefore illegal. In 1997, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that physician-assisted suicide does not represent a constitutional right,
and presently this practice is only legal in the state of Oregon, where the Death with Dignity Law was narrowly passed and has survived various appeal challenges (Zanskas & Coduti,
