In order to have quality of life, the patient must be in such a frame of mind and body where life is a pleasure and not merely a perpetual struggle.
A person who is suffering from a terminal illness inevitably experiences many things that affect the daily routine. It is not long before the patient is forced to
depend upon others to do many of the menial tasks that once were a simple part of everyday life. As this occurs, patients encounter feelings of worthlessness and inadequacy,
believing that they have become a burden to those around them.i There are a number of variables where the method of euthanasia is
concerned, not the least of which includes active (deliberately overdosing with medication), passive (deliberately withdrawing medical treatment), voluntary (patient request), involuntary (against patients wishes), nonvoluntary (no request from patient either
way), assisted suicide (doctor provides means to ends but does not administer).ii Euthanasia by action and omission refer to intentional death by carrying out and action and by withholding
life-sustaining care, respectively. II. LEGAL ASPECT The recent Terri Schiavo situation has once again sparked heated debate over the legality of euthanasia; most interesting of all, however, is
the very state in which Schiavos nonvoluntary/euthanasia by omission occurred upholds laws against exactly what transpired. Florida statutes 765.309, 458.326 and 782.08 all prohibit euthanasia, with the first statute
