euthanasia, and therefore it is important to consider all other available options in terms of patient care regimes, pain relief and counseling before reaching a final decision. Living wills are
most useful in delineating the wishes of those patients who are no longer able to articulate their wishes. III. Conclusion If all
other factors have been taken into consideration and all other alternatives considered, then in the end the patients right to a painless and dignified death should be paramount.
The topic of euthanasia has received a great deal of media publicity recently, especially in the light of the recent decision by
the Dutch government to legalize the practice. The new law states that euthanasia may only be carried out under certain circumstances, namely if the patient is an adult, if the
request is made voluntarily and after due consideration, and the only alternative is unacceptable suffering (Clements 1). However, the debate as to whether
it is right to allow terminally ill patients to end their lives, or to assist such patients to commit suicide, will continue despite legislation.
There is a very strong case to assert that, despite the arguments put forward against euthanasia, everyone has the right to a dignified and painless death, and that it
is also the right of the individual concerned to decide, when suffering becomes intolerable, that they wish to end their life. There are
