It could be asserted that there are various ways in which
democracy in the European Community could be improved, particularly with reference to the harmonisation of issues including access to information and to the judicial process, and with regard to the
extent to which the public are able to participate in governmental policy-making.
It has been noted over the years since the inception of the EU that there has been something of a lack of consistency with regard
to the way that matters relating to democracy are decided. This can be attributed in large part to the social and cultural differences which can be seen to exist between
the various member states. Even though the ultimate
objective of democratisation is to provide a level playing field for the whole of the community in terms of economic and social policies, this is something which is still very
much in progress. For example, it can be seen that there are discrepancies in the levels of affluence between different countries, and that this affects the way that they formulate
and conduct their economic and monetary policies. Countries which
