co-operation between the European Union and NATO. It will advance European unity while maintaining the vitality of the transatlantic alliance" (President Clinton, 2000). This was the
official reaction of the United States to the plans to increase the prominence of the European Security and Defence Policy with the formation of a combined force. There may be
many reasons for this, but we can argue that it has become a possibility due to the greater integration we have seen occur in Europe, and as such the welcoming
of the situation by the United Sates may also be seen as an opportunity by that country to be in a position to withdraw from the area. Now in the
post cold war era, with the integration of a single currency, single markets and closer ties with reductions in barriers between countries within the EU it may appear logical that
the formation and increased presence of a European military force would be a logical step. If we are looking to prove this then we need to consider the evidence.
The original purpose if the European Union was to introduce a trading block with common interests to cement the peace which had been formed in Europe after the second world
