Nonetheless, how they have made even these tiny gains in the market will be reported. The most recent auto show in Japan was the Tokyo Motor Show held between October 25 and November 5 (Kyi, 2003). American and European auto manufacturers displayed their latest models and innovations alongside Japanese models (Kyi, 2003). American and European car manufacturers hoped to claim a greater market share of the Japanese market but history suggests they will not penetrate the market much more than they have in the past (Kyi, 2003). Japanese automakers hold more than 90 percent of the market (Kyi, 2003). Over the first nine months in 2003, for example, all foreign cars together gained only 7.4 percent of the market in Japan (Kyi, 2003). Over those months, 2.44 million motor vehicles were sold, 180,166 of them were not Japanese brands (Kyi, 2003). German brands had the greatest share of foreign cars in Japan, in fact, two-thirds of the foreign cars registered were German (Kyi, 2003). Of that number, 23.5 percent were from Volkswagen, 19 percent were Mercedes and 14 percent were BMWs (Kyi, 2003). Even Renault, which is directly responsible for rescuing Nissan from collapse, sold only 1,718 cars under the Renault brand (Kyi, 2003).
