As you read this, more and more animals are being herded into pens or fields and shot dead in the head, their carcasses tossed into mass graves or burned on huge, odoriferous pyres" (Sullivan, 2001; p. 8). The problem was, and still is, foot-and-mouth disease. In the following paper we examine this condition and the current problems that Europe is experiencing due to the foot-and-mouth disease. Cattle and Europe It should be perhaps noted, first and foremost, that the devastation that will be detailed is, as mentioned, due to foot-and-mouth disease which is, in all honesty, not a condition that is lethal nor even dangerous to humans. It is, in essence, nothing more than a cold or a flu. It debilitates the cattle for a short while and then the animals are fine, with no residue that would harm humans in meat or milk. But, as Sullivan (2001) noted, "The only problem with foot-and-mouth disease is that it weakens the infected animals for a period of time, lowers their milk production and weight somewhat, and, because there are international bans on exports from infected regions and countries, prevents their sale for exportation" (p. 8). So, because of this economic pressure, the cattle are killed.
