the European Union. We cannot therefore talk about "Europe" as a single entity in any meaningful way. Since the aim of this paper is to present information on the U.S.
and European nations, well have to narrow it down to specific countries, and since this paper is very short well use the U.K. since we get our laws from them.
But well start with the U.S. The United States * Basic political structure: the U.S. is a representative democracy, meaning that we elect representatives to make decisions on our behalf.
This is mostly because the U.S. is too large for a direct democracy-in which we would make our own laws and govern ourselves-to work effectively. * Conservatives and liberals: As
a very general rule of thumb, conservatives in the U.S. today are associated with big business, fundamental Christianity, support for the death penalty, and anti-abortion activism. Liberals are associated with
environmental causes, unions, they are pro-choice and anti-death penalty. (This summary is unfair to both sides, and only touches on a few "hot button" issues.) Perhaps it would be better
to say that conservatives generally prefer the status quo, and look at the past with longing, while liberals work for change, believing that things as they current exist are unfair
to many people, and they can do something about it. * Government style: the U.S. government has three branches, the Executive (the President), Legislative (Congress) and Judicial. It is set
