trying to remain true to yourself in the midst of a materialistic society (in keeping up with the Jones) can be incredibly difficult when pressure seems to come from all
sides. In Eugene Ionescos play "Rhinoceros" he examines this reality, but he offers the viewer (or reader) a very powerful situation where it is not just subtle pressures, but powerful
pressures that combat a persons individuality. The following paper examines the character of Berenger who is determined not to turn into a rhinoceros even though everyone else has. The paper
examines how the play offers us pros and cons of keeping ones individuality in the face of such pressure. Individuality and Rhinoceros Berenger, in the beginning of the
play, is not necessarily an average person. He already has an identity that is perhaps not like the others and so when people start to turn into rhinos he really
doesnt think it is too odd as he always thought the world was strange. But, gradually all of the people in his society turn into rhinos. In the beginning
it is seen as something of a tragedy to those around Berenger, something of a plague as people fear turning into a rhino, wondering what they can do about it.
But, eventually people begin to accept it and even want to become rhinos. It becomes popular to become a rhino and soon everyone that Berenger knows becomes a rhino, though
one person, Daisy, doesnt apparently succumb right away. In this simple setting we see that people are often afraid of something different in a society. When only a few people
begin to talk about something it seems ridiculous if it is about change. But, when more and more people become attracted to it they influence others and everyone eventually believes
