This lithography is a study in action. The lack of color in the lithograph emphasizes the image of the horse, giving it an almost abstract "feel," as the background is only suggested, rather than drawn. The horse is emerging from what appears to be high grass, as only the top half of the back legs are shown and the forelegs are not so submerged with the horses body itself pictured on an incline. The grass is only suggested by sweeping black lines that flow to the left. All of the lines in the background curve, at least somewhat to the left, around the horse, which has its head turned to the right. The black lines coming off the flowing main suggest high wind and the main ripples fiercely in this gale. The horse is light in color, with shades of gray used to show its strength and musculature. Also, the lines constituting the background become lighter towards the left, which emphasizes the sense of movement. By inclining the horse, the flanks are in the right foreground, while the head of the horse is centered with the space. In the opinion of this writer/tutor, the artist is trying to convey how he perceives nature as a whole. Naturally, in writing his or her own paper, the student researching this topic should express a personal opinion. There is a fierce quality about the lithograph, as the mane of the horse is whipped by the wind, standing straight out from its body.
