was born in 1855 and grew up in a small Midwestern city called Terre Haute, Indiana (Readers Companion PG). His parents, Alsatian immigrants, ran a grocery store (PG). He attracted
the attention of local leaders by supporting various causes, one of which was a stand against participation in a nationwide railroad strike in 1877 (PG). By the early 1880s,
Debs was more and more involved with labor issues, and considered to be a tireless organizer (Readers Companion PG). He ran for city clerk in 1879 on the Democratic ticket
which was his first attempt at office and a successful attempt at that (PG). He was reelected in 1881 and four years after that he was elected to the Indiana
State Assembly (PG). Early on, Debs expressed an interest in politics. Through glimpsing his political journey, and noting his views, one can surmise how he became active in the socialist
party. It should be noted that Debss interest in the railroad causes had not waned. Even though he was more politically active, he did not forget the common man
as many politicians do. In 1894, Debs led the American Railway Union against the Pullman Company but was defeated (Usery PG). The use of injunctions as well as Federal Troops
sent into the Chicago area dismantled the unions efforts (PG). Debs and his cohorts were imprisoned for violating the injunctions and the unions effectiveness was destroyed (PG). Debs was a
labor organizer before he was a socialist. Although unions are, in a sense, not consistent with socialism, Debs early on tried to help the average worker despite capitalisms wrath. It
