A large part of personal and family identity is about survival - a state of mental, physical, spiritual, political and social survival; Welty illustrates that by remaining at arms length from one another, coupled with the absence of proper names when addressing each other, Sister, Stella-Rondo and the rest of the family members harbor very little identity as individuals. Moreover, these skewed characteristics of interaction further indicate how the social, political, economical and religious activities experienced in everyday life represents the very essence of what it means to be a human being, representing how and why a person acts the way he or she does, how one attributes moods, feelings and emotions, the way in which one interacts with another, as well as what governs overall familial behavior. Welty points out how it may be true how a common thread of kinship at the very core of each family member with regard to the inner workings of identity, however, there are grand variances that separate one person from the next when it gets past a superficial level. Welty further illustrates how the family structure is based upon the participation of its members, with each individual bringing an entirely different perspective and approach to the overall composition.
