Essay / Research Paper Abstract
3 pages in length. Welty makes clear her own feelings in Death of a Traveling Salesman even without overtly stating them by delving more into Bowman's character than the older man's – and his young wife - who ultimately save his life. The life they saved, however, was merely physiological in form; even this jolting experience is not enough to purge Bowman from his wretched loneliness and lack of identity. No bibliography.

than the older mans - and his young wife - who ultimately save his life. The life they saved, however, was merely physiological in form; even this jolting experience
is not enough to purge Bowman from his wretched loneliness and lack of identity. Welty works at portraying the older man as someone everyone can relate to, someone that
everyone ultimately becomes when involved in a happy relationship. Whether this meaning is truth and beauty, comfort and happiness or any other pertinent combination, the author implies that each
person harbors the hope of making sense out of life with the help of establishing significance to it. In essence, Weltys message of the pursuit for self-awareness and wholeness
is based upon a foundation of perceptions - sometimes ill-conceived - comprised of the individuals oppressive struggles; by effectively establishing the concept of ones consciousness, Welty demonstrates the manner by
which all reality is based upon each individuals awareness of what that reality is ultimately to become. The fictional works of Eudora Welty
instill feelings of confusion, judgment, disbelief, as well as a sense of personal inadequacy in what she depicts so clearly as the friction between/among society, family and self. She
forces her readers to view and view again tendencies of conflict toward self and society, forcing them to take responsibility for how ones ill-perceived reality - such as that which
exists in Death of a Traveling Salesman - creates a ripple effect that causes lifes unnecessary conflict. The common denominator among Weltys myriad
short stories is the spiritual side of life, the side that brings people together from various circumstances and infuses them with life lessons they would otherwise never have learned.
