of qualitative research and ethnography with respect to analysis of everyday life and the evaluation of wider issues, it is perhaps helpful to look briefly at the strengths and weaknesses
of these methodologies. For example, it is evident that there are a number of ways in which qualitative data can be regarded as more useful, in terms of the assessment
of social trends, than quantitative methods. If one confines a study strictly to quantitative data, then it is certainly possible to produce a "snapshot" of a current situation, but without
qualitative data as well, there is no opportunity to investigate the underlying dynamics which have given rise to the quantitative data.
If one is looking, for instance, at gender issues in relation to discrimination in the workplace, then
quantitative data will give an overview of the respective percentages of men and women in promoted posts, the differences in salary scales, the number of times grievance procedures have been
implemented in respect of sex discrimination, and so on. However, whilst such data is clearly useful, it does not address the broader perspectives of gender issues in the workplace. The
fact that there is a larger number of women than men in part-time jobs within an organisation might reflect personal choice on the part of the individuals concerned, but it
could also be the result of socio-cultural factors such as the expectation that women will combine domestic responsibilities with work, whereas men are expected to focus much more strongly on
