explanations as to why some groups seem intent on oppressing other groups. Basically, however, this oppression is a reflection of such societal problems as ethnocentricism, the tendency of a
group to perceive the world only from the perspective of their group. It is human nature, after all, to identify with our own culture. When we begin to
oppress others and/or to discriminate against them, however, we are committing one of the most reprehensible of injustices. It is a given in
this world that our cultural community is a primary determinant in who we are. It defines, in part, our ideology and our world outlook. As a consequence, we
develop an ethnocentric outlook. We have a tendency to view the world from the closely defined perspective of our own cultural group. In many respects this is a
positive phenomenon. It serves to consolidate cultures and to strengthen them. This ethnocentrism, however, has negative impacts that sometimes offset the positive ones.
In the negative sense, ethnocentrism entails a cultural bias on the part of the observer, a cultural bias which can manifest in many problems regarding
