People, in general, simply accept the "ways things are" as being correct. They can rationalize that "things have always been done this way" or that "wiser minds" than ones own
have figured out weighty issues of morality, therefore making the societal stance correct. This sort of ethnocentric attitude is narrow and limited, but difficult to see around, particularly when one
is young. A work that helped this writer/tutor to have an epiphany of understanding that societies are not always right, that elders are not always correct, was the classic novel
Huckleberry Finn by Samuel Clemens (a.k.a., Mark Twain). Hucks adventures on the Mississippi, with the runaway slave Jim, and the maturation process that this entailed for Huck, provided insight
for me into how Hucks society was wrong, which led to an understanding for this writer pertaining to how societies in general could be wrong, and subsequently to my own
reevaluation of American culture as a whole. While the student researching this topic indicates "movie" several times in the assignment, I would like to point out that the assignment
does say that the examined work can be "a movie, a play, a book or short story." Also there are numerous film versions of "Huck Finn" if the
student prefers to cite a movie. Additionally, as this writer/tutor knows nothing of the students background, for this assignment, which asks the student to draw on personal experience, all the
writer can do is draw on my own personal experience, which, of course, is considerably different from the students. The student is encouraged, therefore, in creating his/her own paper, to
