As is stated in the State of the World Atlas "Ethnic Difference is a source of strength in some societies, and of danger in others" (State of the
World Atlas 45). Although we have experienced considerable growth in ethnic communities across the world most of those communities remain isolated from one another. This is the case
even in the U.S., a country which prides itself on integration and multiracial cooperation (Aizenman, 2002; Christian Science Monitor, 2001). Here and elsewhere ethnic differences can translate into a
certain level of danger or even into a certain level of violence. Interethnic cooperation can also be an important component in societal expression as well, however. In this
paper I argue the point that violence can be a very critical component of the manner in which societies express their ethnic differences.
It is my opinion that historically it has been through violence that ethnicities expressed their uniqueness and make a place for themselves in a world that is not
often open to the concept of change. Violence has, in fact, often been integrally related to ethnicity and political makeup. In turn, ethnicity and political makeup often determines
the manner in which nationalism is expressed and in how it differs from that of other nations. Today we still find violence playing a central role in nationalistic expression.
As I will demonstrate below, however, violence is not always required in this expression. One has to only look at maps such
as that included on page 45 of the State of the World Atlas to gain a better appreciate for the ethnic variation which exists in our world. As this
