There are many theories that attempt to explain the violence that seems to be such an inherent part of
the modern world. The fact is, however, that violence has been a component of our world practically since the beginning of mans reign on earth. It might be
contended, in fact, that violence is actually decreasing over time, it is just that our awareness of it is increasing. The reason for that increased awareness revolves around changes
in technology. Interestingly, those same changes might be contended to actually be playing a role in decreasing the cultural and ethnic misunderstandings that lead to violence.
Huntington (1998) purports that "for peoples seeking identity and reinventing ethnicity, enemies are essential, and the potentially most dangerous enemies occur across the fault
lines between the worlds major civilizations" (20). The "enemies" Huntington is referring to are other people, mortal enemies verses spiritual enemies. This contention entails that hate, resentment, discrimination,
and possibly even violence enter into this so-called redefinition. There are, in fact, several inherent fallacies in this contention. The
