crime and the ethnicity and race of juvenile offenders and repeat offenders. Studies continue to link ethnicity and race to the commission of more crimes, more violent crimes, and greater
recidivism. Other factors dominate the field of study, including greater drug and alcohol use, which are said to motivate the commission of crimes, though this does not always emerge in
the current literature. The factors that do affect the outcomes of the studies provide various differentials, but among both boys and girls, ethnicity and race appear to be the biggest
indicators in the commission of crimes when all other factors are even, such as disadvantaged youth and home life. Ethnicity also plays
a huge role in the juvenile offender recidivism rate. This is true in spite of the fact that risk assessment instruments appear to be good predictors of juveniles in the
system who are most likely to become repeat offenders. This indicates that lifestyle factors will continue to dominate the research and that
the most likely juvenile offenders will continue to be disadvantaged, have gang affiliations or have criminality in the family, and have violent arrest histories.
Background In an effort to prove that the literature is biased when reporting that greater numbers of juvenile Black offenders are
involved in crimes, and especially the more severe crimes, Piguero & Brame (2008) conducted a study of adolescent offender populations in high crime inner city areas. The two cities they
