other cultures and styles. It can be argued this is the spread of fashion and the integration of cultures, whilst other will see it as cultural theft. There is
little doubt that fashion change and that there is a borrowing of ideas not only between designers but between countries, otherwise fashion would not cross boarders which is very apparent
in the real world. The criticism that is sometimes levelled is that there can be a lack of information and that there is a low level of creativity, with new
style emulating or building on older styles (Macchioni, 2000). There is problem in identifying when this becomes cultural theft, as nothing is
actually taken and usage denied. However, when there is a adoption of these influences there is also very rarely any benefit passes onto the originators of the style (Brown, 2003).
Often these may be poorer peoples in ethnically diverse areas. There have been many cases where cases have been brought to court
by monitories where they feel that their cultural heritage, which they feel they own, is being used in the wrong way. This was the case in Darwin when an Aboriginal
tribe brought a case against a textile manufacturer for the use of scared symbols on the material (Brown, 2003). These cases are very complex, and the issues are not easily
resolved but the level of borrowing appears to be increasing and this may be seen as an indication of the lack of creativity that is taking place (Brown, 2003).
