History The history of Ethiopia as a recognizable entity goes back to approximately 100 BC, with the "kingdom at Axum in the Northern Regional state (Killil) of Tigray" (A general history of Ethiopia). The Axumite kingdom was at its height from the 4th to the 6th centuries after which it declined; at the same time, the political center shifted from the north farther southward (A general history of Ethiopia). Ethiopia has always been Christian, and its relations with the rising Islamic nations were good; the Arabs considered Axum on a par with China and the Byzantine Empire, and although trade between the Islamic Empire and Axum diminished, it never stopped, indicating that Ethiopia continued to hold the respect of the Islamic nations (A general history of Ethiopia). Axum collapsed in the 8th century and power shifted further South, and the southern expansion -a Christian expansion - "continued over the following several centuries" (A general history of Ethiopia).
