the ethics of plagiarism and how plagiarism can be prevented. Ethics of Plagiarism and Preventing Plagiarism Plagiarism is a very serious action. It is a crime in many
ways for it is essentially stealing the words of another. It is copying the words of someone else, using at ones own, and never giving credit for the idea or
the words. Sometimes plagiarizing can be done innocently as a student reads something and then writes in their own words, but inadvertently almost copies word for word what they read.
Or they may paraphrase and not cite the individual. There are many ways that plagiarism can occur and it should be avoided at all costs for, once again, it is
stealing. Stealing is unethical and the purposeful plagiarizing is very unethical. Even non-purposeful plagiarism is unethical. It is unethical because it is wrong to take ones words as their
own, not giving credit, and it is wrong to steal. It is unethical to be lazy and unconcerned about ones work, or studies, and it is unethical to dismiss the
importance of learning ones subject matter. An example follows: "Student who finds and uses term paper on Internet saves it on computer. Emails it to a student shes never met
who asks for a paper on the subject via a chat room on that topic. Lending student plans to become an English teacher" (Shasta College, 1999). This illustrates a person
who is not really concerned about learning on their own, and ethically they should be concerned if they plan to teach. They are engaging in behavior that is essentially illegal
