There may be the desire to have a system that is ethical and fair, but to assess the potential implementing the ethical issues of the situation have to be considered. Employers have a responsibly to their employees, both morally and in law, there is a duty of care and they are expected to act in a fair manner. This case is one that may be seen as relating to the concept of duty, and how those duties can be carried out. The employer is in a position of power, as are management; and they have a duty to behave fairly to their employees. It may also be argued that there is an ethical duty to the shareholders, as they are the owners of the business, and looking at the ideas of theorists such as Friedman, this is an ethical duty that should be seen as a primary duty. According to Freidman the duty of management to shareholders and the only other ethical duties are those which are required for business, these include legal requirements and the standards demanded by customers or actions which may add value (Chyssides and Kaler, 1999). In this model to undertake an action for altruistic reasons only is a waste of resources.
