firms. By creating a very distinct and predictable structure, it is possible to apply legal principles equally. The balance of the legal system is based on the ability
to apply the law to everyone with equanimity. The American Bar Association (ABA) has adopted a number of model rules that have been applied to both law firms and
lawyers. These rules are based on shaping conduct and setting parameters for expected behaviors in relation to the legal process. For example, Rule 1.7 defines conflict of interest
and identifies specific methods for ensuring that law firms and the lawyers who work there do not participate in behaviors that place a client at risk of predication in a
legal process that can be influenced by biases. Law firms have to maintained a clear focus on reducing the potential for conflict of interest by showing due diligence in
identifying the existence of any conflict between the interests of existing clients (ABA (c), 2011). If, for example, a law firm represents the corporate interests of ABC, Inc., a
lawyer in the firm cannot also represent the Jane Doe in a law suit against ABC, Inc. or any of its subsidiaries. ABA Rule 5.4 identifies the importance
of the professional independence of the lawyer, a rule that relates directly to the role of the law firm in relation to the role of the lawyer (ABA (e), 2011).
