where ethical codes are less enforced and perceived as less important than in the physical world. Ethics may be defined as "that branch of philosophy dealing with values relating
to human conduct, with respect to the rightness and wrongness of certain actions and to the goodness and badness of the motives and ends of such actions" (Dictionary.com, 2007). However,
there is general agreement between most philosophical schools regarding general rights and wrongs, such as theft being wrong. While Kant may argue that the only ethical approach is to follow
ones duty, regardless of the outcome Mills argues that the outcome is also important, so goodness and badness are also in consideration.
What is right and wrong in terms of digital content appear to have more burred lines and what is theft appears to be less clear. For example, there is a
high level of permissiveness for software piracy. While the separation of the person undertaking the piracy from the harm it creates may add to this there is also a general
agreement that this is unethical as well as illegal. However, it is not always this clear-cut, there is little doubt that the software is sold at premium prices, there are
some very dominant companies whos position is so powerful that they can demand very high prices, even if this is not seen as justified for the development and distribution costs
even allowing for a large profit. In some cases the costs of one piece of software may even be subsiding the development costs of others that are then being given
