advances have allowed the field of structural engineering to change dramatically in only
the past few years, and engineers face more questions of ethics of choice than ever before.
The paper discusses engineering organizations' codes of ethics before progressing to the
philosophies of Kant (the categorical imperative) and Mill (the greater good) in providing
a framework for decision making that can contribute to structures of greater integrity and
safety. The paper uses examples from India, China and Japan. Bibliography lists 15
