PR was not a profession at the time, because ethics were not involved early on (Gower & Lamme, 2003). By the time the fifties would roll around, there are many stories about questionable PR practices and it was thought that PR posed many dangers to the democratic process (Gower & Lamme, 2003). The concept of public relations is relatively new, but it has been around for decades. Still, there are problems as it concerns its use in society. Ethics come into play. Before delving further into this topic, it helps to define public relations. II. What are Public Relations? Public relations are defined by various experts in different ways. One definition is as follows: "Using the news or business press to carry positive stories about your company or your products; cultivating a good relationship with local press representatives" ("Term Definition," 2007). One can get a sense of what PR is all about, but one question often crops up which is, how is it different from advertising? ("Term Definition," 2007). It is a good question, but the answer suggests that there is a huge difference. PR is actually quite the opposite of advertising because with the latter, one has to pay for a message to be sent to the public ("Term Definition," 2007). PR is generally something that is not paid for. Sometimes, people get bad publicity, but there is a theory that all publicity is good when it involves people who want to be famous.
