challenge individual ethics. When conflicts occur in relation to the delivery of care, identifying personal ethics and relating them to the organizational directives can help to identify challenges to
care delivery. In some cases, the organizational directives, if they go against a persons individual ethics, can define a poor fit for the individual care provider. For example, if
the hospital setting takes a legally necessary hard-line approach to end of life care, including the application of advance directives, the individual care provider must be prepared to support the
cessation of life support when advanced directives are in place. If personal ethics, which can relate to religious values or personal morals, define a different viewpoint in cessation of
life support, personal ethics come in the way of the scope of care defined by the ethics of the organization and by the legal ethics of advanced directives (Curran, 2003).
Though a person may rationally understand the ethics of the organization, the application of personal ethics, then, can come in the way of providing appropriate care. Autonomy and Beneficence
The concepts of autonomy and beneficence are often discussed in relation to providing nursing care. They are components of the trifecta of principles of ethical care for patients, which
include: 1. Patient autonomy, or the right to personal decision making; 2. Nonmaleficence, or the causing of no harm to the patient; 3. Beneficence, or the responsibility to contribute
to the welfare of the patient (Tauber, 2005). Autonomy is supporting whatever process needs to occur to ensure that a person has the greatest level of self-determination possible.
