of ethics in education is to teach students the meaning of ethical behavior and to develop the critical thinking skills that students need in order to make ethical judgments, the
other side of the same coin sees teachers behaving ethically as well. Certainly this is a requirement for their professional relationships, but students generally do not see the function
of those relationships. They are well aware of events and conditions within the classroom, however. 1. What are the ethical responsibilities that teachers and education leaders have?
Smith (1996) provides a list of behaviors and activities that teachers should practice when they are acting ethically with their students. Among
these are: * Active teaching so that classes are not inordinately focused on student recitation; * Careful selection of instructional materials. Texts should not be "chosen solely on the
basis of the marketing of the text by a salesman" (Smith, 1996; p. 17); * Being available to students both during and after class time; * Uniform grading practices; and
* Maintaining professional relationships with students and avoiding any preferential treatment for any individual student (Smith, 1996). Beyond these points educators have an
