of general ethical theory with direct application extended to the area of information technology. The article "Ethical concepts and information technology" publish in 1995 in Communications of the ACM
is a comprehensive article. Which considers ethics from Ancient Greece through to today. Laudon distils the many ethical perspectives into four main schools; " namely collective rule-based ethics, individual rule-based
ethics, collective consequentialists and individual consequentialists" (Laudon, 1995). The article start with a consideration of what is meant by an ethical perspective and a brief history of ethical thought.
Define the need for individuals to be able to act from free will, and the ethics are some of the guiding principles that help those using free will to make
the right choice. They aim to answer questions such as what action should be taken, what an individual may need to do and what goals to aim for (Laudon, 1995).
This also goes further in defining what laws an individual thinks we should have and believe in, and how this is a practical science that help guide behaviour (Laudon, 1995).
This may appear very detached from information technology, however, when we consider the many issues that abound in IT there are
many practical application. One of the examples used in this article is the act of software piracy and the copying of software that is protected by copyright. When we look
at the different perspective there are those that believe it is the rules that lead to the correct result, whilst others look to the consequences rather that the rules. Thos
