however, is determined in many instances by journalistic ethics. The recent scandal involving the prominent major network news anchor Dan Rather is an example of how even one lapse
in ethics can spell the end of a career. The Dan Rather scandal that unfolded on CBSs 60 Minutes II report in 2004 is a lesson in yet another
fact as well. That fact is that ethical implications increase with the amount of influence an individual has. Because of Dan Rathers position of influence, his viewing audience
and the journalism world as well expected more of him in terms of character and judgment. Just a few years ago
Dan Rather was one of the most recognizable news anchors on the air. He was also considered one of the most credible and influential news anchors. His career
faltered and ultimately plummeted, however, when he used unsubstantiated documents to call into question the military service of President George W. Bush. Many contend that Rather kenw that the
documents were unsubstantiated but much was at stake at the time of Rathers assertions. Bush was running for his second term as President against John Kerry. Rathers broadcast
suggested that Bush had received preferential treatment by being allowed to serve in the Texas National Guard in order to escape having to serve in combat in Vietnam (Broadcasting and
Cable, 2007). As it turned out, however, the sources that Rather used to formulate this assertion were forged (National Review, 2004). Some contend, in fact, that Rather knew
