This can be traumatizing to those involved in the incident, and demands strict adherence to the guidelines for handling this type of material. This paper responds to a video of a police officer who hits a boy on a bicycle at night, killing the child. Discussion The video was shot by the "dashboard cam" of the police cruiser at 1942 hours (7.42 p.m.) on October 17, 2008 (Police say speeding cruiser struck, killed boy, 2008; hereafter "Police say, 2008"). The video shows the boy appearing from the right and crossing directly in front of the cruiser, which was going 70 mph without lights or siren (Police say, 2008) The version uploaded to the Web does not show the impact; according to Kelly McBride of Poynter, none of the videos broadcast show the actual collision. The issue here is whether or not the entire dashboard cam video should have been released, and why. Reactions to the video published on the stations website range from condemning the parents to condemning the officer to condemning the victim himself. The posts are angry and bitter, and show how powerful an impact video can have on the public. The general public does not have a stake in the accident, except in the fact that it could literally have happened to anyone; the people with a clear stake in the incident are the boy, the officer, the boys family and friends, the officers family and friends, and the police department.
