The wrenching changes that all of business entered into as the Japanese began changing everyones approach did not affect only business processes. The practical side of "how" was
the focus for many years and necessarily remains so, but the more esoteric aspects of corporate function have been attracting increasing levels of attention. Business has been called to
a higher plane, evidenced by the increasing numbers of businesses issuing annual responsibility reports and taking active roles in social responsibility. There is
an increasing sense of the need not only to "do things right," but also to "do the right things." Two areas affected by this perspective in the increased attention
to ethical decision making and acknowledgement of work-related stress. Ethical Decision Making Business - and business schools - are becoming aware of the
"boiled frog" syndrome and increasingly are calling attention to it among employees and students. The story is that if a frog is abruptly placed in hot water it will
jump out of it immediately, but that if he is placed in cold water that then is heated gradually, it will not object and so will allow himself to be
boiled. Whether this is an observation of something true is debatable, but whether it physically occurs or not, it is useful in making analogy to business situations. Business
is more competitive than at any other time, and it moves at a faster pace. There is less time for thinking through an issue, leading managers frequently to react
to conditions rather than control them. The old philosophers - particularly Kant and Mill - provide a framework for making ethical decisions.
