appreciated. Many studies or examination of leadership are aimed at considering effectiveness of leadership to maximize output and satisfy shareholder needs, which may or may not include ethical issues. However,
ethics is becoming increasingly important from commercial perspective, as consumers and other external stakeholders are making judgments and taking action on their beliefs regarding the ethical stance of a firm.
This is placing more pressure on ethical issues, but it may be argued ethical leadership should be more than simply a reaction to market demands, which could result in hypocritical
window dressing and an ultimate disappointment for stakeholders who may have trusted the company (Chyssides and Kaler, 1998). There is a general agreement that leaders will be those who
determine the general ethical nature of a company and the associated values (Mintzberg et al, 2003). Therefore for an organizations to be ethical and moral it is most likely that
there will need to be ethical leadership. However defining and determines what is meant by ethical leadership and the way that a leader can put ethical values into place and
act on them may be difficult to determine. Yet, looking at examples that are able to clearly define what is not ethical leadership the determination of what is ethical leadership
and how it can be practiced and identified will be placed into a more meaningful context. There are many examples of leadership
where there was unethical behavior, but this was not known in advance and the cost wad very high. These are not limited to the business environment. Had the German electorate
have known what actions and policies Hitler would follow once coming to power, correlated the potential outcome of that decision it is unlikely that he would have risen to power.
