somewhat isolated because of their beliefs and yet both find themselves embroiled in circumstances that, as they become increasingly out of control, they (as individuals) are without satisfactory or even
acceptable recourse. Plato also presented such situations in his renditions of the dialogues of Socrates. However, he presented the philosophical rather than dramatic aspects of the tension between individual and
community and demonstrated in "Meno" the ways in which the capacity to understand the world outside the world of the individual and his/her internal world includes the ability to interpret,
characterize, and associate what individual identity with that of the group. Antigone -- Rebellion and Responsibility Initially, "Antigone" appears to be an obvious story of political dilemmas focusing on civil
disobedience and civic responsibility, rather than the personal development and revolution of one woman. Despite classical assumptions and the typical reaction of modern cultures to view the character of Antigone
as a perfect example of heroic resistance to tyranny, the play is not a political drama, but the battle of wills between two family members -- Creon and his niece
Antigone. It does not take much of a leap of imagination to also see the story as a drama of male subjugation and female determination. Antigone affirms to Creon
that the laws of heaven are "unwritten and unchanging, not of today or yesterday is their authority; they are eternal, no man saw their birth" (Antigone 456-459).
