the good and bad elements of homeland security and law enforcement concerning ethics in the nation. Ethics and Homeland Security As mentioned, since 9/11 there have been a great
deal of changes as the homeland security emerged and many changes occurred in society in relationship to protecting the public and law enforcement. One author sums up a great deal
of the truths in the following: "The dangers we face are among the most complex and terrifying that our law enforcement and intelligence communities have ever encountered. The three thousand
innocent lives lost on September 11 are stark reminders of our ongoing battle against an enemy that kills indiscriminately and inflicts pain and suffering as widely as possible; an enemy
whose rage is rooted in a reaction to modernity, but whose methods are as complex and modern as they are dangerous" (Podesta, 2008). It is interesting to note that
the language used by Podesta (2008) is language that reflects a powerful need to have homeland security and strong law enforcement in light of the horrific terrorism that is nearby.
This is a foundation that urges one to see the good elements of homeland security and increased law enforcement involvement. But, on the other hand this author also notes how
"Unfortunately...Rather than enhancing our security while protecting our liberties, they have violated our civil liberties without providing much additional security" (Podesta, 2008). While he is referring to cyberterrorism, this is
