I realize the extent to which ethics will play a significant role in the value of and approach to my practice (Powell, 2005). This is why consulting the code
of ethics will be the first step when presented with any ethical dilemma. If anything is not in the best interest of my client(s), it is addressed immediately.
Ethics and practice go hand-in-hand; one cannot exist without the other. In the event a legal issue is also involved with an ethical concern, an attorney will be consulted.
I also realize that my place in maintaining an effective and ethical environment is to constantly look inward and assess my own involvement. Honesty is a valuable tool in
counseling, however, it also has its appropriate place; at times it does not improve the situation but rather makes it worse. Discretion is necessary when deciding how and when
to be honest with clients. By the same token, the extent to which culture and cultural identity play a significant role in the counseling process is both grand and
far-reaching; that people relate differently within the counseling setting based upon their personal cultural upbringing speaks to the need for me to incorporate specific methods that readily address these diverse
components. Prejudice and personal bias can cloud a counselors neutrality, which can quickly spiral into an unhealthy - and unethical - relationship with clients who are a different sex,
age, social class or sexual orientation than the counselor. As the patient in #1 of Ethical Decision Making, I would have a combination of fear, worry and confusion as to
the steps I need to take to help myself. While I cannot be sure what my parents would say if told, I can be fairly sure of their reaction.
