A 5 page paper that considers the ethical issue of animal testing. It is through animal testing that scientists have developed vaccines and other medications that have relieved incredible suffering and saved millions of human lives. On the other hand, if we look at animals as sentient beings, can we really say it is ethical to use them in testing? of animals and humans are in direct conflict, whose rights take precedence? (University of Minnesota, 2003). History supports the use of animal testing; it is through these tests that scientists
have developed vaccines and other medications that have relieved incredible suffering and saved human lives (Dolan, 2002). All vertebrate animals have similar nervous systems, thus, scientists concluded long ago that
what would cause pain in a human would most likely cause pain in another vertebrate animal (University of Minnesota, 2003). In fact, it was this realization that led to so
many of todays regulations regarding the use of animals in testing labs (University of Minnesota, 2003). One of the rules is that animals must be given analgesics, anesthetics and sedatives
for any procedure that causes more than momentary distress or pain (University of Minnesota, 2003). Current laws also require a committee review of any use of animals as test subjects
(University of Minnesota, 2003). The moral and ethical issues become rather confusing in light of the medical breakthroughs made that would not have been made without the animals. Consider Dr.
Thomas E. Starzl who was the first to succeed with kidney transplants (Americans for Medical Progress, 2002). Starzl used dogs as his test subjects and over a period of time,
adjusting the procedures each time, fifteen dogs gave their lives (Americans for Medical Progress, 2002). Hundreds of thousands of people have had their lives saved by the procedure that was
perfected using those dogs (Americans for Medical Progress, 2002). The first corneal transplant is recorded in 1838 when a doctor transplanted the cornea from a pig to a patient (Dolan,
