standard, however, Boeing has managed not only to survive but to prosper in economic times which have severely challenged not only Boeing but also the companys competitors.
In 1999 Boeing was facing severe constraints in its global market. While in 1997 the company had been unable, even given their employment of some
238,000 people to keep up with customer orders for commercial jet planes, that year saw a dramatic reduction in the number of Asian orders as the economy in Asia began
to falter and as a result the Asian airlines began to cancel orders for planes (Minneapolis Star Tribune, 1998). In response
to the loss of business Boeing was faced with the ethical dilemma of terminating approximately twenty per cent of its employees or resorting to less stringent manufacturing criteria in order
to keep its head above water financially (Minneapolis Star Tribune, 1998). Instead of choosing either of these responses to the slack global market Boeings response was to strengthen its
forces. In August, 1997, Boeing completed a merger with another commercial jet plane manufacturer, McDonnel-Douglas Aircraft Company (Minneapolis Star Tribune, 1998). This merger came at a time when
Boeing began to experience difficulties in production due to parts shortages, assembly line congestion and other delays which caused schedules to fall behind (Minneapolis Star Tribune, 1998).
