for beneficence. Such an instance is faced by nurses and physicians when treating patients who are members of the faith known as Jehovahs Witnesses (JWs). Due to that faiths interpretation
of Chapter 15 of the Book of Acts, they will not accept any sort of blood product for themselves or their children as part of their treatment. In order to
serve these patients to the best of their ability, various medical centers have made it part of their mission to develop and provide bloodless treatments and surgery options for JWs
patients. These methods include use of "erythropoietin, hyperbaric oxygen, hypothermia, desmopressin, and fluid resuscitation to treat anemic conditions" (Caitlin, 1997, p. 289). In a case scenario, the patient, who
is a JWs has executed advanced directors that clearly prohibit the use of blood products. However, excessive bleeding from a gastrointestinal bleed has created a condition of severe anemia, which
has subsequently led to congestive heart failure and intubation. The physician in charge of the case sees blood transfusion as the only option; however, a multidisciplinary team proposes alternative treatments
that in line with the patients beliefs and directives. In deciding what course of action to take in such cases, application of a ethical decision-making framework has been found to
be immensely helpful in gaining insight into the specific issues involved and subsequent perspective on what course of action to take. First of all, looking at the "Code
of Ethics for Registered Nurses" formulated and published by the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) clarifies where conflicts in ethical values lie. This Code of Ethics both identifies and defines the
