is right or wrong to do? Is it right to do something in one instance and wrong to do that same thing in another instance? This last question relates to
moral dilemmas. Typically, people have specific principles they will not violate, no matter what the situation is. If a person finds reasons to violate their own code of ethics, they
really do not have a code. There are always certain principles, such as integrity, that will always govern a persons behaviors. There are no exceptions. Ones code of ethics
is founded on basic beliefs, many of which were developed in childhood. Ethics are influenced by ones religious beliefs as well as by ones culture. My own set of ethics,
for instance, is based on strong Christian beliefs. A set of ethics provides a person with a code of behavior, rules they follow. For instance, it is wrong to
steal or it is wrong to deliberately harm others. There is so much crime of all sorts today, that it would be easy to conclude that ethics has long
left society. That would be an inaccurate conclusion. What can be said is that the role of ethics in many areas of society is changing (Joseph, 2003). Joseph (2003) said:
In all three sectors of democratic society: the public sector driven by the ballot, the private sector driven by the market and the third or non-governmental sector driven by
voluntarism and the institutions of civil society, ethics is coming to assume a new importance that is challenging the status quo. If we look carefully, we will see that there
