There are a number of ways in which ethical dilemmas can be seen to have a significant effect on person-centred counselling, especially with regard to medical issues and the
way in which ethical elements may affect either the counsellor, the person in receipt of counselling, or both. Consequently, it would be useful to look at some example of the
way in which ethical issues affect particular situations, and the way in which counsellors might deal with these.
For example, the structure of a counselling programme itself, as opposed to
the content, may be something which can be seen to be impacted by ethical concerns. In the majority of the cases it is agreed that there is a need for
confidentiality between the parties concerned, and this is something which is part of the foundation by which a counsellor can establish trust and rapport with a client. However, in some
situations it may be the case that there will be a negative or detrimental impact from maintaining confidentiality, especially if information which is brought to light during the counselling process
is something which affects other parties.
