response to this demographic reality is the recent emphasis on multicultural education, which is a movement designed to "empower all students to become knowledgeable, caring and active citizens in a
deeply trouble and ethically polarized nation and world" (Clemons, 2005). The cultural and social makeup of the classroom that is focus on this paper roughly mirrors that of the US,
as the majority of the class is white, with racial minorities comprising roughly a quarter of the students. The racial minorities represented in the class are African American, Hispanic and
Asian American, as well as several students from India. While it is true that practically any instructional situation can be changed for the better in some fashion, this classroom
does have a high degree of multicultural sensitivity in that assignments are intentionally designed to aid the students in developing cultural self-awareness, which has been identified by scholarship as the
first in developing "sensitivity to multicultural issues" (Clemons, 2005, p. 19). The subject matter is a "college-entry-level CAD course" and the principal assignment demonstrating multicultural awareness is for the
class to research "four generations of their family histories" and document the "cultural and symbolic influences" that helped to shape their individual families and background (Clemons, 2005, p. 19). In
the class discussion that evolved form this assignment, the students expressed their "surprise at their varied backgrounds," as well as "appreciation for their classmates differences" (Clemons, 2005, p. 19).
