education, including university and college classrooms. These behaviors include: arriving late to class or leaving early, talking with peers during lectures, verbally expressing dissatisfaction over assignments or grades, making sarcastic
comment, leaving exams noisily, sleeping during lectures, exhibiting academic dishonesty, reading the newspaper in class, asking questions that are irrelevant, exhibiting bad manners, and text-messaging friends with cell phones (Murphy,
2007, p. 49). The first step in establishing an ethical and professional culture in a university classroom is to investigate and determine the origins of the unacceptable behavior
(Murphy, 2007). In many cases, the students involved in these behaviors may not acknowledge either the seriousness of their actions. For instance, students may rationalize academic dishonesty, claiming that they
are too pressured by factors such as time constraints to avoid plagiarism (Murphy, 2007). In exploring why a particular student is engaging in an acceptable behavior, such as sleeping in
class, experts advise speaking to the individual privately, as this could be due to a number of factors, such as the effects of "medication, substance abuse, fatigue, or personal loss"
(Murphy, 2007, p. 49). Once a cause is identified, the student and the instructor an collaboratively address strategies for addressing the problem. The next step is for an instructor to
be quite clear about what is expected from students in terms of behavior. This can be done by outlining rules and expectations in the course syllabus, while also "clearly discussing
the possible ramifications with the class" that will be imposed for infractions of the rules (Murphy, 2007, p. 49). This discussion can actively involve students in establishing the sort of
culture that they envision as conducive to learning. Student input into how infractions of certain rules will be handled also empowers them by actively involving them in this process.
