The issue is not only a practical issue, but also an ethical issue, especially when looking at how healthcare issues, such as obesity in young adults, should be tackled.
Ethics may be defined as "a system of moral principles" or "the rules of conduct recognized in respect to a particular class of human actions or a particular group, culture"
(Dictionary.com. 2011). In this case the group may be healthcare professionals and the culture may be the healthcare culture or the national or regional culture. When applying ethics
to healthcare issues the first consideration is what system or approach to ethics should be applied; deontological approaches advocate undertaking action which are determined only by duty, it is a
rule based system, with the approach that consequences cannot be fully anticipated so duty should be the driving force, this is an approach advocated by Kant (Collinson, 2007). However,
determining what the duty one has towards those who are obesity, in either helping to prevent or reduce it as well as treatment difficult to determine, and where there are
limited resources, the duty that a healthcare professional has may be different to ascertain. If the duty is deemed to be the treatment of the sick, then undertaking preventive measures
to reduce obesity before illness occurs may be beyond that duty, as it is looking to consequences. Furthermore, if the duty is deemed to be one respecting freedom of choice
of others and non interference this becomes a breach of that duty, even if the healthcare professional has the individuals wellbeing as a motivation.
Alternatively, consequentialism may be used, an approach more aligned with Mills, where actions and decision may also take into account the consequences, this leads to utilitarianism (Collinson,
