by ethical principles. The researcher as a student has this duty to a number of parties, including but not limited to themselves, their academic institution, their profession, to those who
may participate in the research as subjects or aids and those who may make use of the research results. It is argued by the Committee on Science, Engineering, and Public
Policy (2009) that in the past research ethics were learnt primarily through the research act, observing and learning from others including mentors and peers. It is also argued that this
approach alone may not develop sufficiently comprehensively through practice if not supplemented and supported by more active learning and consideration. The aim of this paper is to consider the way
in which research undertaken can be approached in an ethical manner, by considering different areas of ethics and the relevant values and practices which may be applied. 2. Ethics
To discuss the applications of ethics it is first necessary to consider the meaning of the term. The term ethics comes from the Greek ethos, meaning customs. In the past
ethics were merely customs, the way people were expected to behave and the standard of behavior. This agrees with the way in which the Committee on Science, Engineering, and Public
Policy believed the ethics of researchers in the past were formed. The term ethics may be defined as "That branch of philosophy dealing with values relating to human conduct, with
