Essay / Research Paper Abstract
This is a 5 page paper on ethical issues faced in adult education. Ethical issues are of great importance in the process of adult education. Through the process of adult education, adult learners and their educators must determine what courses, learning processes and goals can be established for content and throughout this process social and moral considerations may be controversial and involve conflicting beliefs and values. Educators must identify the goals of the course in relation to the personal and professional goals of the adult learner while at the same time allowing for adult learners to either accept or reject the opportunities made available to them through education. Sometimes, educators may be upset or may disagree with the goals adult learners have set for themselves but they must also allow for the fact that adult learners differ from students who are children in that they already have established goals, lifestyles, beliefs and values which they may not care to change through the course of education.

than all of those currently taking place in elementary, secondary and postsecondary institutions (Imel, 1999). In addition to the vast opportunities which are available in adult education, educators have to
remember that adults learn in many settings other than the traditional classrooms such as the home, the work environment, community centers and agencies and adult learners undertake further education for
a variety of reasons which may range from personal development to professional enhancement or to open areas of knowledge to become more involved with "community problem solving" (Merriam and Caffarella,

research and theory development in transformative learning have "taken center stage since the late 1980s" (Merriam and Caffarella, 1999, p. 318). In the process of teaching adults, certain ethical and
