Principles, it must be remembered these principles were not intended to be used in this way: General Principles, as opposed to Ethical Standards, are aspirational in nature. Their intent
is to guide and inspire psychologists toward the very highest ethical ideals of the profession. General Principles, in contrast to Ethical Standards, do not represent obligations and should not form
the basis for imposing sanctions. Relying upon General Principles for either of these reasons distorts both their meaning and purpose (American Psychological Association, 2003). This is the reason the six
principles have short descriptive explanations as to their meaning. It is the rather lengthy list of Ethical Standards that are more specific and that are applied when determining if a
psychologist has violated ethical standards. Competence or beneficence and nonmalfeacense is well-placed as the first principle. Ethical issues arise when a psychologist fails to keep up to date by attending
seminars and workshops, reading, and discussing best practices with colleagues. This is an issue that may be easier to identify by other psychologists than other issues. Crossing into areas
