The one component that will solidify the ethical relationship between student and school counselor, however, is the element of trust. Establishing trust between counselor and client is critically important in ensuring the success of the entire counseling process...However, the management of confidentiality is often fraught with conflicts and ethical dilemmas for most counselors. When the client is a student and a minor, the issue is even more complex because school counselors must balance the rights of minor clients confidentiality with the legitimate rights and concerns of parents and other stakeholders and the counselors commitment to act in a minors best interest (Lazovsky, 2008, p. 335). II. ETHICS AND CONFIDENTIALITY The ethical ramifications involved with adult counseling situations are considerable enough on their own, however, when children are brought into the mix the stakes increase significantly. While there are ethical issues that pertain primarily to adult counseling, there are those that are relevant to childrens protection as well, such as confidentiality. For example, during a recent visit twelve-year-old Jennifer had with her school counselor - Dr. Kendall - she made several references to her stepfather being very affectionate with her, asking her to sit on his lap while they watch television, giving her big hugs where she can feel his private area and coming into her room at night to see what she is wearing to bed.
